Mervyn
Brookes Wedge Story Great
site! I had
three standards. It was the basic model with the plastic seats and as an
early model had the ‘humped’ bonnet. The ride was every bit as good as my previous
car which was an XJ6. The next
one was a 1700 HLS complete with fabric seats and a full length ‘Webasto’ roof and was also a
great car, My last one was an X. reg.
2.0 HL in metallic bronze which also gave good service as a ‘tow tug’
on a regular basis and over long distances. All these
cars were worked hard and completed high mileage with out any problems. These cars were totally under- rated which
caused high initial depreciation meaning that they could be bought at bargain
prices second-hand. Then as
now people bought these cars after one or two owners never serviced them
correctly ran them into the ground and then moaned about how bad B.L. cars
were. The same happened with the Allegro, Montego and the Maestro and to some
extent the all the later models, with the exception of the 600 series and 75.
Looking back the design concepts were good even if the build quality at times
was variable. But have you ever driven or looked at the build quality of many
European cars of the time. I had 3
Montego’s from the basic 1.6 to the M.G. all did very high mileage and were
worked hard with again no problems. I still have a series 2 Allegro 1300,
which is still giving sterling service after all these years. Used as a
stand-by it never fails to start and has never let us down. The only
thing ‘rubbish’ about B.L was the after sales service and service part
availability. Odd isn’t it that comedians had a field day about these
products which were in the main and of their type as good and if not better
than many other makes cars of the period. Oh how we laughed and laughed about
B.L. Not so funny now is it? Mel. B. Added 7th June 2006. Tell us
your Princess story. Email it to me and I’ll put
it on the site, and don’t forget the pictures! |
